As far as I know, they're both out of print, and for some reason neither Amazon nor Alibris lists <i>Prayers to the Goddess</i> under its right title -- you have to look for "Book of Hours" by Galen Gillotte to even find it. Not sure why. But you can still get them used.

Thank you for the review. I was not aware of these titles.

It appears that <i>Prayers to the Goddess</i> may be out of print. It is not listed on the Llewellyn website.

It has proven far harder for me to give up eating candy than it has been to wear only certain garments every day ;)

Wow. I'm glad you posted this. I'm stuck in a not-so-great place right now (my own fault) and I really needed to hear/read some of this. I'm glad everything went well with your ceremony. *hugs* Take care.

One of the benefits of wearing a habit is that, like much in monastic practice, it is designed to free one from enslavement to one's own preferences. There are people who actually become upset of the store is out of their preferred brand of toothpaste or breakfast cereal, or if they can't find the particular type of fashionable clothing that they're looking for.

Wearing a habit, or other type of "uniform" liberates you from this sort of nonsense and frees your mental, emotional, and spiritual energies for more helpful purposes.

And, of course, it is also a public witness to your vocation. Observers see you in your attire and know that, even in our highly secularized society, it is still possible for people to be so devoted to the Divine that they will dedicate themselves to a life of service. Even if they, themselves, are not especially religious, this can still be uplifting.

For me, another former goth, it's been kind of weird to see my wardrobe changing to NOT all black. :) It's the preponderance of greens and browns that is strange for me now. And the emphasis on totally practical, comfortable clothes that are relatively simple in design (I make up for this with increasing amounts of religious jewelry).

Interesting, but not surprising. I do like the fact that people in the U.S. seem to slowly but surely be thinking about their diets in terms of environmental, social and abuse issues. Every little bit helps.

I should come out and take your nutrition class at some point :)

After years of actually being into the goth thing, I find it terribly ironic that now I'm going to have to wear black for the rest of my life! But yeah, it does make some things simpler. The Salvation Army in Fitchburg sorts all their women's clothing by color, so I don't have to spend a lot of time sorting through the racks, for instance ;)

Funny, this is more or less exactly my diet. One of the bases of the Radical Nutrition class I teach is that, whether you look at food choices from the point of view of environmentalism, workers' rights, opposition to abuse of animals, opposition to the centralization of political power, opposition to abuse of U.S. military power or simply the healthiest possible diet for yourself, you tend to end up eating more or less the same thing.
